Historic nomination: Hispanic Sotomayor as justice

Federal Appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor has been selected by President Obama to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter who announced his retirement earlier this year. If approved, Sotomayor will become the first Hispanic justice, and the second woman currently on the bench. Obama described Sotomayor as a lawyer who "has worked at almost every level of our judicial system," and added she has "more varied experience of the bench than anyone currently serving on the Supreme Court when they were appointed." Obama cited Sotomayor for her legal ability on both financial and corporate issues. These skills could be significant in the years to come as the Supreme takes on more cases dealing with financial and economic issues, especially given the current economic climate. Kim Gandy, president of National Organization for Women (NOW) announced a campaign that will help to ensure Sotomayor’s swift nomination. Advocates for Latino and other civil rights have long believed the highest court in the land should reflect the makeup of the U.S. society, and her supporters believe her credentials and skills will be pivotal in dealing with the challenges faced by millions of Americans.
